About a quarter of an hour from installation to your first published program page – in six steps, in a fixed order.
Whoever creates sessions first and venues afterwards has to touch every session a second time. Steps 2 and 3 rarely take more than ten minutes together.
The roadmap
- 1Activate
Switch the plugin on under Plugins. The Events menu appears on the left. On first start, the plugin creates about 25 common roles (speaker, host, DJ, workshop leader …) so you can start right away.
- 2Create the structure
Under Events → Venues, add every room and stage – ideally with color and image right away. Under Categories, add the topics (talk, workshop, concert); five to ten are enough. The roles already exist. Details: Venues, categories and roles.
- 3Create the main event
Events → Add New, with the name of the whole event as title (e.g. “Book Fair 2026”). Leave the Parent event field on “None” – that is what makes the entry the bracket. Date and start time may stay empty. Publish.
- 4Enter sessions
Add New again: title, date and start time (required), choose the main event you just created as Parent event, plus venue, category and a featured image. From about 30 sessions on, the CSV import pays off.
- 5Publish the program page
Pages → Add New, title “Program”, click +, choose the Shortcode block and enter
[event_calendar]– with square brackets, no spaces before or after. Publish and view. - 6Check
Open Events → Dashboard. The traffic light shows at once whether required details are missing; “Check now” leads to the affected entries.
Which snippet goes on which page?
| Page | Snippet | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Program | [event_calendar] | The main overview with search, day tabs and filters. |
| Timetable | [event_timetable] | The grid with rooms and times. |
| Home page | [event_card id="123"] | Feature a single highlight prominently. |
| Info screen in the foyer | [event_live_ticker] | What is on now, what comes next. |
| Speakers | [event_speakers] | All participants as grid or list. |
| Screen outside the hall | [event_monitor venue="Hall A"] | Full screen per room – with the Room Monitor & Kiosk Hub add-on. |
Every snippet works without options. Only one room, only one category, no search bar – that is set later via parameters; the shortcode generator builds the code for you.
The most common stumbling block: permalinks
If you change the URL path under Settings → Design & Options (e.g. from “events” to “program”), detail pages show “Page not found” until you click “Save Changes” once under Settings → Permalinks (WordPress). You don’t need to change anything there – the click is enough.
Your final check
- The Events menu is visible in the admin.
- There is at least one venue and one category.
- A main event exists and is published.
- Every session has a date and start time.
- Every session belongs to a main event.
- The page with
[event_calendar]is published and shows entries. - The dashboard shows no red items any more.
- The permalinks were saved after changing the URL path.
Then one of two things is almost always missing: date and start time on the session, or the assignment to the main event. The dashboard finds both in seconds.
